PROGRAM ONE: MADE IN AMERICA
SUN., OCT. 12 & TUES., OCT. 14, 2008

“Made in America, features works both composed and premiered in the U.S.  But there is more!  We will take you into the world of Cirque du Symphonie as you hear Barber’s Adagio for Stings performed with acrobats Iouri Safranov and Nikolai Melnikov as they join the CSO in a spectacular collaboration of music and body sculpture.

Also making his CSO debut is Van Cliburn Gold Medalist Jon Nakamatsu performing the very work that earned him the Gold, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3.  Rounding off this remarkable concert is the symphony masterpiece, Symphony No. 9 From the New World by Antonin Dvorak.

PROGRAM TWO: CALIFORNIA SYMPHONY ROCKS!
SUN., JAN. 25 & TUES., JAN. 27, 2009

Announcing the west coast premiere of the Dead Symphony, a tribute to the music of the Grateful Dead.  That’s correct – the Bay Area’s own rock legends immortalized in a spectacular symphonic setting that is definitely a once in a lifetime experience for Dead Heads and “CSO Heads”!  This unusual evening of symphonic firsts begins with the beautiful and mesmerizing Firebird Suite by Igor Stravinsky.

PROGRAM THREE: NEW BEGINNINGS!
SUN., MAR. 8 & TUES., MAR. 10, 2009

“New Beginnings” brings the second CSO Premiere by our Young American Composer-in-Residence, Mason Bates, one of the freshest voices in American music today.  Symphony Magazine said that Bates “was bound to appear sooner or later…Many artists in one of these worlds have dabbled in the other. But Bates is the first to carry on two careers in tandem, and win credibility in both arenas….The most impressive thing is how comfortably his two idioms mix.”

We are also celebrating the 200th anniversary of composer Felix Mendlessohn with the CSO debut of the young gifted violinist Stefan Jackiw performing the composer’s great violin concerto.  Closing out the concert is one of the classical music world’s great treasures, Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 4.

PROGRAM FOUR: SYMPHONY IN 3-D
SUN., MAY. 3 & TUES., MAY. 5, 2009

The season’s grand finale “Symphony in 3-D” is going to be a sensory experience for all, beginning with Aaron Copland’s sublime Appalachian Spring which sets the tone for this unforgettable experience. Very young and prodigiously gifted pianist Conrad Tao returns to our stage performing Ravel’s stunning Piano Concerto in G.  You may remember Conrad’s last appearance during the CSO’s 20th anniversary as part of an unforgettable piano duo.  The performance ends in an extraordinary way with Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, as the orchestra is accompanied by a new film by astronomer and visual artist Dr. Jose Francisco Salgado - a multi-media extravaganza!
