Program One
Reach the Outer Limits

SUN. OCT. 14, 2007 AT 4:00PM

TUES, OCT. 16, 2007 7:30PM

This concert set is sure to be out of this world - especially with the performance of Holst's The Planets, and the infamous Leonard Bernstein's Symphonic Dances from West Side Story.

Performing on this program is the California Symphony's Concertmaster, Roy Malan.  He will be featured in the Phantasy on Rimsky-Korsakov's Le Coq d'Or by Efram Zimbalist.  What makes this performance so special is that Zimbalist was one of Roy's teachers!

Leonard Bernstein's most famous work is perhaps West Side Story, a musical first presented in 1957 on Broadway in New York City and later made into a film in 1961. The works he composed for the musical were influenced by classical, jazz, popular and hispanic styles of music.  The Symphonic Dances features the highlights of this masterpiece.

The finale to this incredible evening is Holst' The Planets, the most performed of his symphonies and one of the most cherished in the ochestral literature.  Along with this aural masterpiece will be a visual one created by, Astronomer and Graphic Artist, Dr. José Francisco Salgado.  Holst's work features seven movements, one for each planet in the solar system minus Earth and Pluto.  Considered revolutionary in 1916 and still sounds convincing today. Mars, the Bringer of War is a violent work that deserves a place in any sci-fi shoot out, while Mercury, the Winged Messenger is pure pastoral impressionism. Filled with moodswings and folk influences, Holst created a classic, a musical portrait of astrology eight decades before the term "new age" was infused into our vocabulary.

The visual component consists of seven high-definition videos that accompany the movements in the orchestral suite. Each of the videos includes awe-inspiring images of the featured planet, NASA animations, and historical illustrations from the Adler Collection of Works on Paper.  These videos are not intended to be seen as documentaries but as art pieces that will hopefully inspire audiences and encourage them to learn more about our solar system and the Universe in which we live.
