1Barry Jekowsky, Music Director your life. your music

Program Three

Passion of Movement

At the age of 15, classical guitarist Travis Johnson has already led a distinguished career, won top honors in national and international competitions, recorded an album of his music and continues to win awards from institutes and foundations.  Performing Guiliani's Guitar Concerto, Op. 30 in A Major, Travis will awe and inspire guitarists of all ages!

Also featured on this program is Yaelisa, Bay Area Emmy Award-winning Flamenco Dancer. The Los Angeles Times has called her a "luminary" among flamenco dancers for her extraordinary rhythmic ability, which radiates nothing less than pure emotion infused with sensuality.

It was in 1997 that Lou Harrison made the CD, Lou Harrison A Portrait.  He wrote that "I have greatly enjoyed Barry Jekowsky's conducting of several of my works and am impressed by the youthful strength and understanding that he brings to them."  Included on this CD, and on this performance, is Harrison's Elegy, to the Memory of Calvin Simmons.  This piece was originally written in 1982 as a tribute to the young conductor of the Oakland Symphony who had died in a boating accident.

The program finale is Thckaikovsky's Symphony No. 5.   The 5th may be seen as a work of musical nationalism - it has moments of melancholy, brooding, and unabashed sentimentality, which is commonly identified as Russian in character - an ending with great panache!
