Season Finale includes Brahms, Sibelius, and a World Premiere by New Composer-in-Residence Katherine Balch
“Something Old, Something New,” the final concert in the 2017-18 season, features the debut performance of Composer-in-Residence Katherine Balch’s first commission for the California Symphony, like a broken clock. Music Director Donato Cabrera also conducts Sibelius’ Symphony No. 3, and internationally acclaimed, award-winning pianist Haochen Zhang performs Brahms’ virtuosic Piano Concerto No. 2.

This is the first season programmed after the publication of the organization’s statement of commitment to diversity, with female composers accounting for 15% of all composers programmed (2 out of 13), and living composers 31% (4 out of 13).

Two conductors take the podium in the California Symphony’s March concerts. Guest conductor Ragnar Bohlin conducts works by Vaughan Williams and Pärt, while the second half is Mozart’s masterpiece for full orchestra and choir, under the direction of California Symphony maestro Donato Cabrera.
