What’s Interesting About This Episode
This is the third and final episode of “Poetry in Motion,” a FREE three-part series filmed at Bay Area landmark the Oakland Scottish Rite Center. Produced by Mercury Soul for California Symphony and melding performance with cinematographic visuals, each episode features music for string orchestra that uses poetry as a source of inspiration.
- Britten’s Serenade, performed by string orchestra with tenor Nicholas Phan and hornist Meredith Brown, sets to music a selection of six poems by British poets on the subject of night.
- Grammy nominee Nicholas Phan is one of the foremost interpreters of Britten, and his recordings of Britten’s songs have garnered critical acclaim.
- The piece begins and ends with horn solos, performed by Meredith Brown, using only the instrument’s natural harmonics. Some notes may sound sharp or flat to audiences used to western music but don’t worry – that’s exactly what Britten intended.
